2011 Mazda3 MPS - A Turbocharged Engine

The 2011 Mazda3 MPS has been officially launched in Malaysia for RM 179,895.20 (price includes insurance). At the heart of the Mazda3 MPS is the award-winning MZR 2.3-litre DISI turbocharged engine, and Mazda has outfitted its hot hatch with enough visual differentiation to stand out.

Aesthetically, the Mazda3 MPS wears 18" aluminium wheels with high-performance Dunlop tyres, bonnet-mounted intercooler scoop, bi-xenon headlamps, LED tail lights, revamped front and rear bumpers, side skirts, black rear valance, and roof-mounted rear spoiler.

Inside, the black-coloured cabin carries over the Mazda3’s dash design but adds red graphic design on the seats and trim fabric plus red stitching on the seats, door trim, steering wheel, shift lever and center armrest. Additional equipment includes a new multi-information display (MID), an LED turbo boost gauge, an upgraded audio system and Bluetooth connectivity.

The MZR 2.3-litre DISI turbocharged engine churns out 258 hp and 380 Nm, which goes to the front wheels via a torque-sensing limited-slip differential, a revised drive shaft and a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox. 0-100 km/h takes a quick 6.1 seconds, while top speed is limited to 250 km/h.

For better handling, the Mazda3 MPS’s body shell has been further lightened and strengthened, while the steering is revised for improved accuracy and feel. The retuned suspension now comes with stiffer springs, higher damping rates and larger stabilisers. The new electronically-controlled brake assist system, along with the standard six airbags and traction and stability controls, offers security to complement the driving fun.

Bermaz Launches Mazda8

Mazda 8
It's the latest third-generation incarnation, the Mazda8, as it's called, that continues to carry the flag, and it's the latest Mazda to join the Bermaz stable in the country. The vehicle, which sits on Mazda's LY platform, is powered by the normally-aspirated 2.3l MZR L3-VE block, offering 161bhp at 6,500rpm and 203Nm of torque at 3,500rpm, mated to a five-speed Activematic auto tranny.

As befits an upmarket people mover, much of the glitz goes inside the cabin, which with its low floor and long wheelbase layout offers the occupants lots of roominess and comfort. In terms of seating arrangement, it's a comfortable fit for six and a full occupancy of eight, even though in reality seven would be the optimal maximum.

The driver's seat is eight-way power adjustable, while the second row and suitably named Super Relax Ottoman seats offer 80mm of slide adjustment to maximise legroom. As for the third row seats, these are generously sized and cushioned to provide ample support. Everything is leather on this one.

The 6:4 split third row features Mazda's unique karakuri folding system. Simply pulling a strap on each seat causes the seat cushion to sink and the seatback to fold, opening up a large flat luggage area. The return mechanism is powered, so you can open the seats at the touch of a switch.

Even with the third row seats in place, you still have a decent 357l of cargo space, which will take two sets of golf clubs, for example. In addition, a 349mm deep trunk under the floor offers maximum capacity of 109l for storage of everyday items, regardless of the seat configuration chosen.

Features include a 3D blackout instrument panel, dual power sliding rear doors which open 785mm wide, a powered tailgate that can be operated at point or from the driver's seat, as well as a powered sunroof. Oh, and a three zone air-conditioning system that has a unique first - a Panasonic nanoe ion generating air purifier system, which of course features in the latter's household appliances.

Other kit includes rain-sensing front wipers, a Clarion 2-DIN DVD/audio 7-inch touchscreen head unit, dual front airbags, front side airbags and curtain airbags covering all three rows of seats, four-wheel ABS, DSC, EBD and brake assist, ventilated disc brakes all round and 16-inch wheels riding on 215/65 series tyres, among other things.

A choice of five colours are available, these being Crystal White Pearl, Copper Red, Sparkling Black, Metropolitan Grey and Sunlight Silver. The Mazda8 is priced at RM190,228, on the road without insurance.

New Model Mazda 2 Launched With Sedan and Hatchback

The Mazda 2 was launched and available in two bodystyles – five-door hatchback and four-door sedan – the supermini is imported CBU from Thailand. Both model types, built at the AutoAlliance Thailand plant in Rayong, are powered by a ZY-VE MZR 1.5l twin-cam engine, which offers 102bhp at 6,000rpm and 135Nm of torque at 4,000rpm, with a four-speed auto gearbox in tow. Two specification levels are being offered for both the sedan and hatch - V-Spec and R-Grade.

You can choose between the standard V Grade and the sporty R Grade for both bodystyles. While both grades come with the same MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension, the R Grade suspension gets “Sport Tuning”. Front brakes are ventilated discs while rears are drums. The 2’s steering system is of the EPS variety. Opt for the R Grade and your Mazda 2 will roll on low profile 195/45 R16 rubber while the V Grade does with 185/55 R15 tyres.

The Mazda2 comes in seven colours - Sparkling Gold, Cool White, Aurora Blue, Metropolitan Grey, True Red, Highlight Silver and Black Mica, with the signature Spirited Green shade available as an eighth colour, only for the hatch.

Prices for the Mazda2 1.5L sedan is RM77,622 (V-Spec) and RM80,622 (R-Grade), while the hatchback goes for RM79,822 (V-Spec) and RM82,822 (R-Grade), all on-the-road, without insurance.
