POPULAR Hybrid car, the Toyota Prius made its debut in Malaysia, at a media preview held at UMW Toyota Motor today.

The all new third generation Prius, which was first launched in the United States and recently in Japan and Australia has been receiving tremendous response. Despite the economic conditions, the all new Toyota Prius has become the top seller with more than 31,000 units sold in Japan.

Speaking at the function, Mr Kuah Kock Heng, president of UMW Toyota Motor said, “The Prius has proven that hybrid technology is viable, durable and one of the best ways to preserve the environment while maximizing our natural resources at the same time. As a result, hybrid technology is now a mainstream option which is being adopted by auto-makers all around the world”.

Although this is the first time UMW Toyota Motor is about to sell the Prius in the market, the hybrid technology had been introduced to Malaysians much earlier. In 2003 UMW Toyota donated the 1st Generation Prius to the National Science Centre to educate Malaysians about Toyota’s Hybrid Technology. The new Prius will feature a powertrain that’s 90 per cent newly developed with significant improvements over the previous generation.

The Prius also adopts a new beltless 1.8-litre, four cylinder petrol engine with 98 horsepower which runs at lower rpm during highway cruising for more relaxed and fuel effi cient performance.

Priced at RM 175,000 in Peninsular Malaysia inclusive of insurance for private registration, UMW Toyota Motor targets to sell 100 units of Prius this year.
