2009 Honda Civic 8.5

From the way the latest Civic looks, it seems that the designers and product planners in Japan may also have felt that it still looks very good and the specs are still current enough that little needs to be enhanced. You have to look hard to see the differences – even if the cars are side by side. If you think this is due to the 'hard times’ that have hit carmakers, bear in mind that the work on this Civic 8.5 would have started last year so it’s not related to the economic downturn. So to make it easier for you, here are the cosmetic changes: new grille and bumper with oval foglamps and smoked headlamp covers and at the rear, the lights have a new design with a 'diamond cluster’ appearance. The Civic 2.0S also gets 17-inch alloy wheels with a new sporty design while the Civic 1.8S has new fabric upholstery for the seats. And that’s about it in terms of updates to the model! The Civic Hybrid, likewise, has the same cosmetic changes but this version was already announced earlier in the year so it’s not exactly new to Malaysians. It remains the only officially-imported hybrid model in the Malaysian market and Honda expects to sell 300 units this year. Since the government announced the incentive for hybrids that brought their prices down, Honda has had 50 orders and 33 units have been delivered.

Prices (inclusive of insurance) for the new Civic range are as follow: Civic 1.8S: RM114,980, Civic 2.0S: RM129,980 and Civic Hybrid: RM129,980. The similarity of the price of the Civic Hybrid with the Civic 2.0S is interesting and offers customers a choice of having a car which is highly fuel-efficient (and friendlier to the environment) or a performance-oriented car. In the view of Atsushi Fujimoto, CEO/MD of Honda Malaysia, it seems that Malaysian buyers still have a preference for performance but he believes that in time, increased concerns of fuel economy issues will see hybrid models becoming more popular.

For those who want to add a sporty touch to their Civic, Honda Malaysia also offers Modulo accessories comprising front and rear spoilers and side skirts at a package price of RM5,000. You can also add illuminated panels to the door sills for RM690 a set or protect the floor of the boot by getting a boot tray (RM330). Honda Malaysia also encourages the use of proper seats for small children and offers childseats ranging in price from RM1,360 to RM1,540. Also available through Honda dealers is a standalone GPS navigation unit (Garmin Nuvi) for RM2,440.

The Modulo accessories are developed by a Honda subsidiary and manufactured to the same standards as Honda cars so they are of a very high quality. Apart from being custom-designed for each Honda model, they also come with a warranty.
